Dangote Refinery to End Crude Oil Imports by December 2025

Date:

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is set to halt all crude oil imports by December 2025, shifting fully to Nigerian-sourced feedstock as long-term foreign supply contracts expire, according to company executives.

Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Dangote Industries, told Bloomberg that the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery is finalizing arrangements to rely solely on domestic producers by year-end.

In June, the refinery sourced 53% of its crude from Nigerian suppliers and 47% from the United States. The plant also previously received shipments from Brazil, Angola, Ghana, and Equatorial Guinea.

“We expect some of the long-term contracts will expire,” Edwin said. “Personally, and as a company, we expect that before the end of the year, we can transition 100 per cent to local crude.”

The shift follows improving relations with local traders and the Nigerian government, enabling a more consistent supply of domestic crude. In July and August, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) is scheduled to deliver five cargoes of nearly one million barrels each to the refinery.

Currently processing around 550,000 barrels per day, the $20 billion Dangote Refinery—commissioned in May 2023—is already impacting Nigeria’s energy landscape by reducing reliance on fuel imports. Aliko Dangote had long stated the goal of ending the practice of exporting crude for refining abroad only to import finished products at high costs.

Despite an initial dependence on U.S. oil due to limited local supply, the refinery is poised to become a key buyer of Nigerian crude and a major exporter of refined petroleum products as domestic sourcing ramps up in the coming months.
