Global Polio Eradication Budget Cut By 30% For 2026

0

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership that includes the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will face a 30 percent budget cut in 2026, resulting in a $1.7 billion funding gap through 2029.

The shortfall is attributed to a widespread decline in foreign aid, led by the United States’ withdrawal from the WHO, alongside funding reductions from other major donors such as Germany and the United Kingdom.

In response to the cuts, the GPEI announced plans to scale back activities in lower-risk regions—except where outbreaks occur—and prioritize cost efficiencies.

“The significant reductions in funding… mean that certain activities will simply not happen,” said Jamal Ahmed, WHO’s Director of Polio Eradication, during a press conference on Tuesday.

To manage limited resources, the initiative will focus on surveillance and vaccination in high-risk areas and expand collaborations with other global health programs such as measles campaigns. It will also adopt fractional dosing strategies, using as little as one-fifth of a vaccine dose to extend supply while maintaining protection against infection.

Efforts to eradicate the paralysis-causing virus have spanned decades. Although mass vaccination campaigns have significantly reduced cases since 1988, complete eradication has remained elusive, with the first missed deadline occurring in 2000.

As of 2025, there have been 36 cases of wild poliovirus in Afghanistan and Pakistan—the only two countries where it remains endemic—while 149 cases of the vaccine-derived strain have been reported globally, including in Nigeria. Both figures represent a decline from 2024, according to GPEI data.

At least 35 people have been confirmed dead and 46 others injured after a fuel-laden tanker exploded while residents were scooping petrol from it along the Agaie–Bida Road in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.

The tragic incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Monday in Essan community, following the crash of a tanker carrying petrol from Lagos.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Spokesperson, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the tanker lost control due to the poor state of the road and overturned.

He said: “Moments after the crash, residents of the area reportedly trooped to the scene to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker. Tragedy struck when the volatile substance ignited, resulting in an inferno that consumed 35 victims and destroyed properties.”

The Niger State Chairman of the Tanker Drivers Association and National Ex-Officio of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Comrade Farouk Mohammed Kawo, confirmed that the tanker was en route from Lagos.

He lamented that more than 30 tanker trailers had been involved in accidents within the same area this month due to the deplorable state of the road.

Kawo added that despite frequent accidents, youths in the community continued to scoop fuel from fallen tankers. “Last Sunday, a tanker trailer carrying groundnut oil had an accident, and its product was scooped,” he said.

He appealed to the state government to urgently rehabilitate the damaged section of the road to prevent further tragedies.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, in a statement, described the incident as “worrisome, unfortunate, and pathetic.”

“This is yet another painful, difficult, and tragic one for the people and the state government,” the governor said. He expressed dismay over the recurring practice of residents rushing to scoop fuel despite repeated warnings on its dangers and urged citizens to place more value on their lives.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) also expressed grief over the incident.

NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, condoled with the government and people of Niger State, particularly the families of the victims.

“Our sympathies are with every family that is affected in this unfortunate incident. We commend all the emergency responders for their humanitarian assistance to the victims. This disaster again calls attention to safety issues in every aspect of our life. This is particularly important in how combustible items are stored and transported at every stage,” he stated.

Kano Hisbah Set To Enforce Court-Ordered Marriage Between Two TikTokers

The Kano State Hisbah Board has concluded arrangements to enforce a court order mandating the marriage of two popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, following their appearance in viral videos deemed “indecent” by the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board.

A magistrate court in Kano had directed the duo to marry within 60 days, citing concerns over moral conduct after videos of them surfaced online.

Speaking on the development, the Deputy Commander General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, said the board had reached out to its Zamfara State counterpart to finalise discussions with the bride’s family in preparation for the wedding ceremony.

He disclosed that both individuals are currently undergoing drug, HIV, genotype, and other compatibility tests as part of the pre-wedding process.

Mai Wushirya was earlier remanded in a correctional facility after the videos went viral, with authorities describing his conduct with the female TikToker as “immoral and demeaning.”

The Hisbah Board reiterated its commitment to upholding Islamic moral values and public decency in Kano State.

Shettima Hands Over Office To Teenager, Reaffirms Commitment To Girls’ Education

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday symbolically handed over his office to a teenager, Joy Ogah, who served as Vice President for a day, using the platform to champion the rights and education of girls across Nigeria.

According to a statement from the Office of the Vice President on Tuesday, the handover took place when Shettima received a delegation from PLAN International, led by its Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation, Helen Mfonobong Idiong.

During her symbolic tenure, Ogah highlighted the plight of girls in Nigeria, noting that over 10.5 million children remain out of school, with girls accounting for about 60 percent of that figure.

She called on the government to provide free sanitary products in schools and ensure access to clean water, sanitation, and proper nutrition for all children.

“Every girl deserves a classroom, a choice, dignity, and not silence,” Ogah said. “When girls are protected, peace becomes possible. I may be the Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day. They must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets.”

In his response, Vice President Shettima reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to advancing girl-child education and inclusive learning nationwide, emphasizing that the administration remains focused on creating equal opportunities for every Nigerian child to thrive.

NDLEA Unveils Online Portal For Drug Integrity Test, Visa Clearance Certificate

0

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched a digital platform designed to streamline the agency’s Drug Integrity Test and Visa Clearance Certificate processes, making them faster, more transparent, and accessible nationwide.

Unveiling the platform the Drug Integrity Test and Visa E-Administration System (DITViCAS) at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), described the initiative as “a paradigm shift in our fight against the scourge of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.”

Represented by the agency’s Secretary, Shadrach Haruna, Marwa said the innovation aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that NDLEA remains focused on tackling drug challenges through both supply and demand reduction strategies.

He explained that the new portal (www.drugandvisa.ndlea.gov.ng) replaces the previously cumbersome manual process that involved physical documentation and delays. The automated system, he noted, would eliminate human interference, certificate forgery, and inefficiencies.

“With this online visa clearance portal, we are ending years of bottlenecks. The system automates all processes, integrates collaboration with partner agencies, and introduces e-certification and verification features to ensure transparency and reliability,” Marwa stated.

He further disclosed that the platform would allow private medical centres to register as accredited partners for the Drug Integrity Test, providing flexibility and convenience for applicants who can now apply, schedule, and complete the process from anywhere.

“The system delivers certificates instantly upon completion of the test, while visa clearance is processed within three days or up to a week in special cases,” he said.

Marwa added that the digital system also supports the inclusion of students and other groups in the drug integrity testing initiative to promote awareness and reduce drug demand across the country, stressing that rehabilitation and counselling services would remain available for those who test positive.

He concluded that the platform’s background verification protocols will strengthen Nigeria’s reputation internationally by preventing drug syndicates from exploiting legitimate travel channels.

“This is a commitment to the Nigerian citizen a stress-free, integrity-driven public service that upholds our national image,” Marwa affirmed.

Police Nab Robbery Suspect Posing As Corps Member In Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old robbery suspect, identified as Chinecherem Ugwuagu, who disguised himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform in an attempt to evade arrest.

In a statement on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspect was apprehended on October 11 along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway by officers attached to the Safer Highway Patrol while fleeing on a stolen Carter motorcycle.

Recovered from him were a gun-like object fashioned from a lotion container, clothes, a bank ATM card, and other personal items.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ugwuagu had earlier broken into a victim’s home at 9th Mile, Udi Local Government Area, where he robbed the occupant using the fake weapon before putting on the NYSC uniform to avoid detection.

“The suspect dressed in the uniform to avoid detection but was arrested by eagle-eyed operatives,” Ndukwe said.

He added that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the officers for their swift response and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

“We will continue to ensure the safety of lives and property across Enugu State,” Giwa assured.

ADC Suspends South-South Vice Chairman Usani Usani Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended its National Vice Chairman (South-South), Usani Usani, over alleged violations of the party’s constitution and conduct deemed harmful to its unity and progress.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Cross River State chapter of the ADC and signed by its Publicity Secretary, James Otudor, the party said the decision followed resolutions reached during the State Working Committee (SWC) meeting held on October 15, 2025, in Calabar.

According to the statement, the committee reviewed multiple petitions and reports accusing Usani of anti-party activities, insubordination, and actions undermining the party’s image and cohesion.

“The decision was taken after extensive deliberations on a series of actions, utterances, and conduct by Dr. Usani which were found to be inconsistent with the provisions of the ADC constitution and grossly detrimental to the unity, discipline, and progress of the party both in Cross River State and across the South-South geopolitical zone,” the statement read.

The ADC said the suspension, which takes immediate effect, was carried out in accordance with the party’s constitution and disciplinary code, pending further investigation and disciplinary proceedings by the appropriate national organs.

The committee also expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary, alleging a lack of consultation with state leadership prior to her selection.

“Her appointment was not made in the best interest of the party in Cross River State, and her loyalty appears skewed against the unity and growth of the ADC,” the committee stated, urging the national leadership to review and replace her with a “competent, credible, and media-savvy” member committed to the party’s ideals.

The statement further cautioned individuals within the coalition movement who have declared interest in joining the ADC but have yet to formalise their membership.

It directed all coalition leaders and intending members to complete their registration at ward level within seven days, warning that failure to comply would result in exclusion from leadership and decision-making activities within the party.

“The ADC will not tolerate dual membership or allow its platform to be exploited by individuals pursuing multiple partisan interests,” the statement added.
