Armed Police Arrest Sowore At Federal High Court In Abuja

Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was arrested on Thursday by armed police officers within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Sowore, who had joined the “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest to show solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was taken into custody shortly after the court session.

According to witnesses, the police officers claimed they were acting on the instructions of the Commissioner of Police. Sowore reportedly questioned the absence of a written arrest warrant and insisted on being accompanied by his lawyer.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong confirmed the arrest in a post on his X handle, noting that efforts were underway to secure Sowore’s release.

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has announced plans to conduct the 2026 Local Government Council Elections across the state, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2025.

Chairman of the Commission, Mamman Nda Eri, made the announcement on Wednesday during a press briefing in Lokoja, stating that the notice complies with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, which requires a notice of election to be issued at least 360 days before the polls.

Eri said the elections will cover 21 Local Government Chairmanship positions and 239 Councillorship seats across the state. He added that the detailed timetable and schedule of activities for the elections would be released soon.

He emphasised that only political parties registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are eligible to sponsor candidates and urged all stakeholders to adhere strictly to KOSIEC’s guidelines for a transparent and credible process.

“We advise political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the timetable, the Electoral Act, and KOSIEC guidelines to ensure free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections in Kogi State,” Eri stated.

The KOSIEC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity, noting that the early publication of the election notice aims to boost stakeholder confidence and preparedness.

Representatives of political parties, civil society organisations, and security agencies—including the Nigerian Army and Police—attended the announcement and pledged support for a peaceful and credible exercise.

Eri also appealed to media organisations and non-governmental bodies to intensify voter education campaigns ahead of the elections, stressing that active citizen participation is vital to strengthening grassroots democracy.

King Charles Meets Pope Leo XIV Ahead Of Historic Joint Prayer At The Vatican

King Charles III has met with Pope Leo XIV during a landmark visit to the Vatican, marking the first time a reigning British monarch — and head of the Church of England — will publicly pray alongside a pontiff since England’s break from Rome five centuries ago.

Arriving with Queen Camilla on Wednesday evening, the royal couple were welcomed by the Swiss Guard at the Apostolic Palace before a private audience with the Pope on Thursday morning. The meeting took place inside the papal library, following which both leaders are set to attend an ecumenical service at the Sistine Chapel.

The midday service, to be broadcast live by Vatican media, will be jointly led by Pope Leo and the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell. It represents a symbolic act of reconciliation between the Catholic and Anglican traditions, centuries after the schism triggered by King Henry VIII’s split from Rome.

The service will focus on environmental stewardship — a shared cause between the pontiff and King Charles — and will feature combined performances by the choirs of the Sistine Chapel and Saint George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Charles, 76, will also be conferred the title of Royal Confrater at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, one of four major papal basilicas in Rome, where a custom seat will be dedicated for him and future British monarchs.

This marks Charles’s first meeting with Pope Leo, who succeeded the late Pope Francis in May 2025. The visit coincides with the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year, which has drawn millions of pilgrims to the Vatican.

PDP Northern Leaders Endorse Kabiru Turaki As Consensus Candidate For National Chairmanship

Northern stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, as the consensus candidate for the party’s national chairmanship ahead of its forthcoming elective convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, Governor Umar Fintiri of Adamawa State said the decision was reached collectively by northern PDP leaders but emphasized that it does not bar other aspirants from contesting the position.

The meeting, held at the residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, was attended by several prominent figures including Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Umar Fintiri (Adamawa), as well as PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

The PDP’s national elective convention is scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, where new members of the National Working Committee will be elected to steer the party toward the 2027 general elections.

Senator Makarfi, along with former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and other northern leaders, had earlier been among those considered for the chairmanship before the consensus decision in favour of Turaki.

Nnamdi Kanu Represents Himself In Court As Defence Lawyers Withdraw From Trial

Detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Thursday appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja to open his defence in the terrorism case instituted against him by the Federal Government.

The proceedings took a dramatic turn when Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), applied to withdraw from representing him, stating that the defendant had “taken the case back” from the legal team. Other Senior Advocates on the defence team also withdrew their representation.

Confirming the development, Kanu told the court that he would represent himself for now, although that might change later. When asked by the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, if he wanted a lawyer assigned to him, Kanu declined the offer.

Defending himself orally, Kanu argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to try him in the ongoing terrorism case.

The IPOB leader has listed several high-profile individuals — including former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Minister of Works Dave Umahi, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), and former Minister of Defence Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) — among his proposed witnesses.

The trial continues.

The Niger State Government has expressed condolences to victims and families affected by Tuesday’s petrol tanker explosion in Essa community, Katcha Local Government Area, which claimed at least 42 lives and left more than 60 others injured.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Murtala Bagana, the government described the incident as a “painful loss” and reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Essa and surrounding communities.

Acting on the directive of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, a delegation led by Bagana visited the explosion site and hospitals where survivors are receiving treatment. He announced that the governor had approved comprehensive and free medical care for all victims.

Bagana confirmed that severely injured patients are being transferred to the National Hospital in Gwagwalada for advanced treatment, while others are receiving care at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Bida and Agaie General Hospital.

He also cautioned residents against the dangerous act of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, stressing that such behaviour has repeatedly led to loss of lives across the country.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn with the people of Essa and the surrounding communities. We appeal to residents to avoid the dangerous act of scooping fuel from accident scenes,” Bagana said.

The state government reiterated its commitment to enhancing road safety, emergency response, and infrastructure rehabilitation to prevent future tragedies.

The explosion occurred when a tanker overturned on the deteriorated Bida–Badeggi–Agaie Road and burst into flames as residents attempted to scoop fuel.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the victims included nine men, 24 women, and nine children, while several others sustained severe burns.

Emergency responders, including the police, DSS, NSCDC, FRSC, and local volunteers, were deployed for rescue operations, as some residents remain unaccounted for.

Community leaders blamed the poor condition of the road for the tragedy and urged both federal and state governments to urgently rehabilitate it to avert further disasters.

Ogun Assembly Summons Ex-Agric Commissioner Over Alleged Irregularities In Anchor Borrowers Programme

The Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture has summoned former Commissioner for Agriculture, Adeola Odedina, alongside key officials of the defunct Anchor Borrowers Programme, to appear before lawmakers over allegations of illegal deductions from funds belonging to participants of the scheme.

The Committee Chairman, Hon. Waliu Owode, issued the invitation to Odedina, the Chairman and Secretary of the National Cassava Growers Association, as well as its former executives, Ilori and Segun Adewunmi, including the programme’s project manager.

The invited parties are expected to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, to address questions concerning the programme’s implementation.

The probe follows petitions from several participants who alleged that a commercial bank had deducted their personal funds without providing any benefits under the agricultural initiative.

In response, the lawmakers directed Wema Bank to submit a comprehensive report detailing all disbursements made through the scheme — including a list of service providers, total funds released, and accompanying documentation.

During the Committee’s sitting on Wednesday at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the current Commissioner for Agriculture, Bolu Owootomo, was also in attendance.

Hon. Owode further directed the bank to liaise with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and its Abeokuta branch to provide a verified list of beneficiaries to assist in the ongoing investigation.

He added that the Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-Corruption would collaborate with the Agriculture Committee to ensure transparency and accountability, stressing that the issue concerns the management of public funds.

Peru Declares State Of Emergency In Capital Following Surge In Violence And Protests

0

Peru’s interim President, Jose Jeri, has declared a 30-day state of emergency in the capital, Lima, and the neighboring port city of Callao, following weeks of escalating violence, protests, and organized crime.

“The state of emergency approved by the Council of Ministers will take effect at midnight on Wednesday and will last for 30 days in Metropolitan Lima and Callao,” Jeri announced in a national address on Tuesday.

Under the emergency decree, the government will deploy the military to assist police patrols and temporarily suspend certain civil rights, including freedom of assembly.

The move marks the first major action by President Jeri since assuming office nearly two weeks ago, after the impeachment of former President Dina Boluarte, who was removed amid corruption allegations and rising crime rates.

“Crime has increased disproportionately in recent years, causing immense pain to thousands of families and further hindering the country’s progress. But that’s over. Today, we begin to change the narrative of insecurity in Peru,” Jeri said.

He added, “We are moving from the defensive to the offensive in the fight against crime, a fight that will allow us to regain peace, tranquility, and the trust of millions of Peruvians.”

Peru has been grappling with weeks of unrest led by youth movements demanding tougher action against corruption and criminal gangs. More than 200 people have been injured in recent demonstrations, while one protester was reportedly shot dead by police.

The country’s transportation sector has been particularly affected, with at least 47 bus drivers killed this year in attacks believed to be linked to extortion rackets.

Peru, which has seen seven governments in the past decade, continues to face political instability and deepening public frustration. Jeri, who also serves as Parliament Speaker, will act as interim president until July 2026.

Court Denies Alleged Terror Negotiator Tukur Mamu’s Third Bail Request

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a fresh bail application filed by detained alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mohammed Mamu.

Justice Mohammed Umar, who delivered the ruling on Wednesday, acknowledged Mamu’s health concerns but directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure he receives proper medical care at an appropriate health facility instead of granting bail.

“The detaining authority should not release him but take him to an appropriate health facility where he would be adequately attended to,” the judge ruled.

Justice Umar noted that the prosecution had shown diligence in handling the case, which is one of the factors the court considers when deciding whether to grant bail.

He stated that since the prosecution had been consistent and committed in its case, Mamu’s request for bail could not be justified.

The judge further ordered that the defence counsel should select a suitable health facility for the defendant, to which the DSS must promptly convey him for treatment.

Additionally, the court directed the DSS to allow Mamu access to members of his family while in custody.
