Former United States President Donald Trump has expressed willingness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying he “would love” to hold talks with him during his ongoing Asia trip.

Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump said he was open to extending his visit, which is scheduled to continue to Tokyo, to accommodate a potential meeting with Kim.

While no formal plans have been announced, Trump’s comments mark a renewed openness to engaging with Pyongyang amid lingering tensions over North Korea’s nuclear programme.

Oluyede Appointed New Chief Of Defence Staff As Tinubu Reshuffles Service Chiefs

President Bola Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in the military leadership, appointing General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing General Christopher Musa.

In the new appointments announced on Friday, Major-General W. Shaibu was named Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke became Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas was appointed Chief of Naval Staff.

The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retained his position.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, who said the changes were part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.

“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expresses his profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” the statement read in part.

Tinubu urged the newly appointed military chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them by enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and unity within the Armed Forces.

The appointments take immediate effect.

General Oluyede’s elevation comes less than a year after he was appointed Chief of Army Staff in December 2024, following the death of General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.

Sidelining Me Will Lead To Party’s Burial, Wike Warns PDP Governors

0

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has warned governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that their continued sidelining of him in party matters could lead to the collapse of the party.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Friday, Wike expressed displeasure over his exclusion from key consultations despite his long-standing role in the PDP.

“Have I not said it before now that the booby trap you are setting will consume you? The way these present governors are doing, they will bury this party,” he said.

The minister questioned why he was being left out of major decisions simply because he no longer serves as a governor. “I am the FCT Minister. Are you telling me that because I am not a governor, you will hold a PDP stakeholders’ meeting and exclude me, and then expect the party to survive?” he asked.

Wike maintained that his contributions to the PDP over the years warranted his inclusion in major consultations, adding, “Assuming I am not a minister, by the role I have played in the PDP till now, is it right to say I cannot be consulted in taking decisions of the party? Certainly not.”

He also dismissed claims that the party’s troubles were caused by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting the PDP’s woes were self-inflicted. “All these talks about APC are rubbish. Is it APC that makes you take wrong decisions? You mean two or three people, because they are governors and receive large allocations, will go and decide, and you tell me to follow? Follow who?” he queried.

On the party’s upcoming national convention, Wike accused the leadership of failing to conclude key processes, including state congresses. “If they do the right thing, will anybody stall the convention? They have not done the congresses and other things that should be in place,” he added.

The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions and a series of defections involving key figures such as Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, alongside ongoing legal disputes ahead of its planned convention.

Sowore was arrested on Thursday by armed police officers shortly after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he had attended proceedings for Nnamdi Kanu. His arrest, which was captured in videos widely shared online, sparked condemnation from civil society organisations and human rights groups, who accused authorities of attempting to suppress dissent and silence activism.

Nigerians Demand Accountability in Gold Mining, National Gold Purchase Program

By Bitto Bryan.

In light of the alarm raised by the National Economic Council over the large-scale illegal mining and theft of Nigeria’s solid minerals, including gold as disclosed to State House Correspondents after the 153rd NEC meeting, more Nigerians are demanding for accountability and transparency in the National Gold Purchase Program.

Recall on 23 June 2024, Dr. Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, presented a gold bar to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to mark the inaugural commercial transaction of the country’s new National Gold Purchase Program (NGPP), a program designed to strengthen the naira by using local currency to by gold from small-scale miners, which is then refined and sold to the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) with an initial transaction valued to have added over $5million to Nigeria’s foreign reserves and injected about $6 billion into the rural economy.

Beyond the symbolic presentation of an aggregated 70 kilograms of gold that met the London Bullion Market Association’s “Good Delivery Standard”, In October 2025, President Tinubu announced an additional N1 trillion investment in the solid minerals sector for exploration and infrastructure.

However, cautious optimism now trails these landmark achievements following NEC’s growing concern about the unregulated exploitation of Nigeria’s Mineral wealth and associated loss of national income.

Speaking during an interview on ADBN TV’s flagship program, ‘Morning Express’, Mr. Ken Ugbechie (Publisher, Political Economist,NG) harped on the need to enforce legislative and regulatory oversight, formalize artisanal mining and tackle illegal mining associated with terrorism financing.

Mr. Ugbechie called for stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit(NFIU) and interpol to prosecute the crime of illegal mining , citing the conviction and sentencing of Ansaru Commander, Mahmud Usman to 15 years in prison.

Moreso, Dr. Dele Alake has hailed the verdict as a major victory in the war against illegal mining. As a probe panel comprising of the Committee on Crude Oil Theft and Pipeline Vandalisation, chaired by the Imo state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma had her mandate extended to also investigate illegal mining operations across the country.

Senator Uzodimma announced shortly after that the expanded inter-ministerial committee will now focus on both oil and solid minerals, coordinating with other government agencies to close gaps in monitoring, licensing and revenue collection.

EFCC Recovered ₦100bn Channelled Into Student Loan, Credit Programmes — Olukoyede

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, says the agency has achieved unprecedented results over the past two years, recovering more than ₦566 billion and several foreign currencies from proceeds of financial crimes.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Olukoyede revealed that ₦100 billion of the recovered funds had been channelled into key national initiatives, including the Students Loan Scheme and the Consumer Credit Scheme, in line with the Federal Government’s vision to expand access to education and affordable credit.

“Some of the properties recovered have been allocated to government agencies for use as offices, in line with our policy of ensuring that recovered assets are put to productive use,” he added.

Between October 2023 and September 2025, the EFCC received over 19,000 petitions, conducted 29,240 investigations, filed 10,525 cases in court, and secured 7,503 convictions. The Commission also recovered 1,502 non-monetary assets, including 402 properties in 2023, 975 in 2024, and 125 so far in 2025.

Olukoyede cited high-profile cases involving former governors Willie Obiano, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Darius Ishaku, Theodore Orji, and Yahaya Bello; as well as former ministers Olu Agunloye, Mamman Saleh, Hadi Sirika, Charles Ugwu, and ex-CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele.

He also disclosed the arrest of 792 suspects in investment and cryptocurrency fraud cases in Lagos, including 192 foreigners who were prosecuted and deported.

According to him, the Commission has set up a Task Force on Naira Abuse and Dollarisation of the Economy, which has recorded progress in sanitising currency operations nationwide.

Olukoyede emphasised that the EFCC’s work goes beyond recovery figures, noting that returned funds have also supported agencies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

Governors Endorse Bill Creating Reserved Legislative Seats For Women

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has declared full support for a proposed constitutional amendment seeking to reserve legislative seats for women in the National and State Assemblies.

In a communiqué released after their meeting early Friday, the governors urged members to lobby both federal and state lawmakers to ensure the bill’s passage, describing it as a crucial step toward enhancing women’s political participation and representation.

The bill, set for debate at the National Assembly, proposes the creation of special constituencies to be exclusively contested by women as a temporary measure to boost gender inclusion in governance.

The governors also commended the Federal Government’s economic reforms, particularly the Central Bank of Nigeria’s fiscal stabilization policies, pledging continued collaboration to strengthen the economy.

They further reaffirmed their commitment to addressing insecurity across the country, vowing to work closely with the Department of State Services (DSS) to counter emerging threats and reinforce national stability.

Authorities Unearth 48 Bags Containing Human Remains In Mexico’s Jalisco State

0

Mexican authorities have uncovered 48 bags filled with human remains from a clandestine grave near Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco — one of the regions hardest hit by the country’s ongoing crisis of missing persons.

The gruesome discovery was made in Zapopan, an outlying municipality of Guadalajara, after a local search group located the site about four weeks ago. Officials said forensic analysis is underway to determine the number of victims represented by the remains.

“We need to make progress on the forensic issue so that we can tell you how many victims this number of bags represents,” said Blanca Trujillo, Deputy State Prosecutor for Missing Persons.

Authorities are continuing excavation efforts with the support of the Guerreros Buscadores collective and the National Commission for the Search for Persons, using heavy machinery due to the size of the site.

Jalisco has become the epicenter of Mexico’s disappearance crisis, recording more than 15,900 missing persons — a toll widely attributed to the violent activities of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The latest discovery follows a similar case in June when 34 bodies were found buried near a residential area in Zapopan. Nationwide, more than 127,000 people have disappeared since 2006, when Mexico launched its militarized anti-drug campaign.

In February, the United States designated the CJNG as a “foreign terrorist organization,” linking it to the trafficking of fentanyl — a deadly synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of deaths in North America.

Trump Terminates All Trade Talks With Canada Over ‘Fake’ Anti-Tariff Ad

0

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the immediate termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, accusing the Ontario government of producing a “fake” anti-tariff advertisement that misrepresented former President Ronald Reagan’s remarks on trade.

Posting on his Truth Social account on Thursday, Trump said the ad — aired on U.S. television — was designed to “interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court,” which is set to rule on his sweeping global tariff policy.

“Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” Trump declared.

The Reagan Foundation later confirmed that the Ontario government had used “selective audio and video” from a 1987 Reagan speech, adding that the material “misrepresents” his original message and that legal action was being considered.

The abrupt move marks a sharp reversal in U.S.-Canada relations, just two weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Trump at the White House seeking tariff relief. During that visit, Trump had described Carney as a “world-class leader.”

Carney, in a speech on Wednesday, had warned that the U.S.’s new trade posture had “fundamentally changed” and that Canada’s economic strategy “needs to change dramatically.”

Trump’s tariffs — particularly on steel, aluminum, and autos — have hit Canada’s manufacturing sector hard, leading to job losses and higher production costs.

Despite the suspension of trade talks, both nations remain bound by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which ensures that about 85 percent of bilateral trade continues to flow tariff-free.

Both leaders are expected to attend the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Malaysia and the APEC Forum in South Korea, where the fallout from the diplomatic rupture could take center stage.
