The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old robbery suspect, identified as Chinecherem Ugwuagu, who disguised himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform in an attempt to evade arrest.
In a statement on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspect was apprehended on October 11 along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway by officers attached to the Safer Highway Patrol while fleeing on a stolen Carter motorcycle.
Recovered from him were a gun-like object fashioned from a lotion container, clothes, a bank ATM card, and other personal items.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Ugwuagu had earlier broken into a victim’s home at 9th Mile, Udi Local Government Area, where he robbed the occupant using the fake weapon before putting on the NYSC uniform to avoid detection.
“The suspect dressed in the uniform to avoid detection but was arrested by eagle-eyed operatives,” Ndukwe said.
He added that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the officers for their swift response and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
“We will continue to ensure the safety of lives and property across Enugu State,” Giwa assured.
