Shettima Hands Over Office To Teenager, Reaffirms Commitment To Girls’ Education

Date:

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday symbolically handed over his office to a teenager, Joy Ogah, who served as Vice President for a day, using the platform to champion the rights and education of girls across Nigeria.

According to a statement from the Office of the Vice President on Tuesday, the handover took place when Shettima received a delegation from PLAN International, led by its Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation, Helen Mfonobong Idiong.

During her symbolic tenure, Ogah highlighted the plight of girls in Nigeria, noting that over 10.5 million children remain out of school, with girls accounting for about 60 percent of that figure.

She called on the government to provide free sanitary products in schools and ensure access to clean water, sanitation, and proper nutrition for all children.

“Every girl deserves a classroom, a choice, dignity, and not silence,” Ogah said. “When girls are protected, peace becomes possible. I may be the Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day. They must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets.”

In his response, Vice President Shettima reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to advancing girl-child education and inclusive learning nationwide, emphasizing that the administration remains focused on creating equal opportunities for every Nigerian child to thrive.
