Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled to India following weeks of deadly protests across the country. The resignation was confirmed by the army and officials at the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi.
According to a leading national newspaper, Sheikh Hasina and her sister took a military helicopter to India. They are reportedly taking “safe shelter” away from her official residence, as reported by Reuters.
The protests have resulted in significant violence.
On Sunday, clashes in the capital claimed the lives of at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, and left hundreds injured. Further clashes on Monday in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least six people.
The demonstrations initially began with students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs.
However, confrontations with police and pro-government activists escalated into widespread violence, resulting in over 200 deaths last month. This violence spurred further protests demanding government accountability, culminating in calls for Prime Minister Hasina to step down.
As anti-government protesters planned a march to the capital demanding her resignation, Sheikh Hasina fled the country.
Following her departure, broadband internet and mobile data services have been restored across Bangladesh.
