Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has instituted a fresh ₦10 billion lawsuit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations that members of his family were prevented from visiting him while in custody.

The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja by his lawyer, Ubong Akpan, also names the ICPC Chairman and the Attorney-General of the Federation as defendants.

El-Rufai claims the commission repeatedly denied his wife, Aichatou Asabe, and his son, Abba El-Rufai, access to him during his detention.

According to the former governor, the restriction prevented his family from providing him with food, medication and other necessities, despite what he described as the absence of any court order or lawful justification for the action.

He also alleged that ICPC officials physically restrained and intimidated his wife and son during an attempted visit on July 7.

El-Rufai argues that the alleged actions violated his constitutional rights to dignity, privacy and family life, as well as protections provided under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

He is asking the court to declare the continued restriction of access to his family unconstitutional and unlawful.

Among the nine reliefs sought in the suit is ₦10 billion in compensation for the alleged violation of his fundamental rights.
