ECOWAS Pushes Regional Carbon Market to Boost Climate Investment, Green Jobs
The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is advancing plans for a regional carbon market platform designed to attract climate financing, generate green jobs and open new economic opportunities across West Africa.
The initiative comes as countries in the region face increasing climate challenges and search for additional ways to finance their climate commitments.
At a regional validation workshop in Abuja, representatives of member states and technical experts examined a proposed framework for creating a common carbon market platform for the sub-region.
The ECOWAS Commission says the initiative would enable member countries to exchange information, strengthen cooperation and better position West Africa to benefit from opportunities in the global carbon market.
For countries already developing national carbon market systems, the regional framework is expected to complement those efforts and improve access to international climate financing.
In Nigeria, the initiative is also expected to encourage private-sector investment, support nature-based projects and create economic opportunities from the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
However, ECOWAS says the region has yet to fully benefit from the international carbon market, with inadequate technical capacity, monitoring systems and certification mechanisms among the challenges limiting participation.
The proposed framework is expected to address some of these gaps while promoting a carbon market that is more transparent and credible to potential investors.
The Abuja workshop brought together ECOWAS member states, regional institutions, technical experts and development partners.
Attention is now shifting towards transforming the proposed framework into an operational regional platform capable of converting West Africa’s environmental resources into investment opportunities, employment and greater participation in the global carbon economy.
