British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing an end to months of political uncertainty and internal party pressure.

Starmer announced on Monday, saying he would remain in office until the Labour Party completes the process of selecting a new leader to ensure an orderly transition of power.

The resignation follows growing criticism of his leadership after Labour suffered significant losses in local elections held in May and faced increasing opposition from within its parliamentary ranks.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said every decision he made while in office was guided by his commitment to serving the country.

He thanked his wife, Victoria, for her support throughout his time in government and said he now hopes to spend more time with his family.

The development comes less than two years after Starmer led Labour to a decisive victory in the 2024 general election, securing one of the party’s largest parliamentary majorities in recent history.

Attention has now shifted to veteran Labour politician Andy Burnham, who is widely expected to contest the party leadership following his recent by-election victory and return to the House of Commons.

Under Labour Party rules, only a serving Member of Parliament can contest the leadership position.

Starmer’s departure means the United Kingdom will have its seventh prime minister in a decade, reflecting a period of significant political change and leadership turnover.

His administration faced a series of challenges during its tenure, including policy reversals, internal disagreements and declining public approval ratings.

The Labour Party is expected to begin the process of electing a new leader in the coming weeks, with the successful candidate set to assume the office of Prime Minister upon completion of the contest.
