President Bola Tinubu says more than 13,000 terrorists have been killed in military operations over the past year, while over 124,000 insurgents and their dependants have surrendered since 2023.
The President disclosed this in his Democracy Day address on Friday, highlighting gains recorded by security agencies in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
According to Tinubu, sustained military offensives and intelligence-led operations have significantly weakened terrorist groups and reduced terror-related fatalities.
He revealed that over 124,000 fighters and their dependants had surrendered under Operation Safe Corridor, the Federal Government’s deradicalisation and reintegration programme.
Despite the reported successes, the President vowed that the government would continue its offensive against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and their sponsors until they are completely defeated.
Tinubu also acknowledged that insecurity remains a major challenge, assuring Nigerians that his administration remains committed to protecting lives and property across the country.
The President disclosed that more than 50,000 police officers and thousands of military personnel have been recruited to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
He added that the 2026 budget allocated N5.41 trillion to defence and security, describing it as the largest security allocation in the country’s history.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united in the fight against insecurity, stressing that criminality should not be viewed through ethnic, religious or regional lenses.
He also commended members of the armed forces, police, intelligence agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders for their efforts in maintaining peace and stability across the country.
