Chelle Drops Osimhen, Nwabali as Super Eagles Name Squad for Iran and Jordan Friendlies

Date:

Head coach of the Nigeria national football team, Eric Chelle, has sparked debate after leaving out key stars including Victor Osimhen and first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali from the squad for upcoming international friendlies.

In a statement released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), a 23-man squad was unveiled for matches against the Iran national football team and the Jordan national football team.

Ndidi Returns, Lookman Leads Attack

Captain Wilfred Ndidi returns to anchor the midfield alongside Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka. In attack, Ademola Lookman is expected to lead the frontline in the absence of Osimhen.

The squad adjustment represents a broader reshuffle from the team that participated in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with Chelle aiming to test new tactical combinations.

Several players who were previously in the national team pool were also left out, including Cyriel Dessers, Chidozie Awaziem, Ryan Alebiosu and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro.

Goalkeeping and Defensive Changes

In goal, Maduka Okoye returns to the squad and is expected to compete for the starting position alongside Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye.

Defensively, Semi Ajayi has been recalled, while Scotland-based defender Emmanuel Fernandez receives his first senior national team invitation.

Fresh Faces in Midfield and Attack

The midfield unit also features Raphael Onyedika and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, while attacking options include Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Chidera Ejuke, Paul Onuachu and Akor Adams.

Two players — Philip Otele and Collins Yira Sor — also received their maiden call-ups after impressive performances for their clubs in Europe.

Matches Moved to Turkey

The Super Eagles will face Iran on March 27 and Jordan on March 31, with both matches scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey.

The fixtures were originally planned for Amman but were relocated due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The friendlies will offer Chelle an opportunity to evaluate new players and tactical options as Nigeria continues preparations for upcoming international competitions. ⚽
