Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, have arrived in Casablanca, Morocco, ahead of the 13th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), as they look to reclaim the continental title.
The team touched down in Morocco’s economic capital on Wednesday night from Lisbon, Portugal, where they had been camping in preparation for the tournament.
The delegation, comprising 22 players and officials, was joined in Casablanca by China-based forward Folashade Ijamilusi and USA-based striker Asisat Oshoala.
Confident Start from Friendly in Lisbon
The nine-time African champions held Portugal’s women’s national team to a goalless draw in a keenly contested friendly match played at Estádio José Gomes in Lisbon on Monday evening.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Shukurat Oladipo, and veteran forward Francisca Ordega stood out with impressive performances that bolstered the Falcons’ morale ahead of the continental showdown.
Group Fixtures and Historic Record
Nigeria will kick off their Group B campaign against Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, July 6, before facing Botswana and Algeria in their remaining group matches.
The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in the competition’s history, having won the title nine times — in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018. They also reached the semi-finals in 2008, 2012, and most recently in 2022.
With a track record of never missing the last four since the tournament’s inception in 1998, the Nigerian side will be aiming for a 10th continental crown as they begin their 2025 campaign.
