WAFCON 2024 Semi-Final: Nigeria, South Africa Renew Rivalry With Final Spot at Stake

Date:

Fierce rivals Nigeria and South Africa will clash once again in a high-stakes semi-final at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday, with a spot in the final and continental bragging rights hanging in the balance.

The much-anticipated encounter, set for 5:00 pm (WAT) at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, will mark the latest chapter in a storied rivalry between the nine-time champions Super Falcons and current title holders Banyana Banyana.

While Nigeria enjoys a historical edge — winning 15 of their 23 all-time meetings and eight of their 10 WAFCON clashes — South Africa’s recent victories, including a landmark win in the 2022 edition, have signaled a growing parity.

Tuesday’s clash has been billed as a meeting of African giants, with both sides boasting standout performers capable of tilting the contest.

Nigeria’s campaign has gathered momentum following an unconvincing group stage. Esther Okoronkwo, currently the tournament’s top assister with four, has played a key role in the resurgence. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade has led with distinction, earning two Woman of the Match awards, while Chinwe Ihezuo leads the Super Falcons’ scoring chart with three goals — including a crucial winner against Botswana.

Defensively, Nigeria has yet to concede a goal in the tournament, thanks to the leadership of Osinachi Ohale and the solid performances of fullbacks Michelle Alozie and Ashley Plumptre.

South Africa, though missing key striker Thembi Kgatlana, remain a formidable force. Veterans Jermaine Seoposenwe, Hildah Magaia, and Lebogang Ramalepe provide both experience and attacking threat. Magaia, who scored twice in the 2022 final, remains central to Desiree Ellis’s plans despite not yet scoring in this tournament.

While Nigeria eyes a historic 10th WAFCON title — a feat they’ve dubbed Mission X — South Africa is aiming to cement its status as a dominant force in African women’s football with a second consecutive championship final appearance.

As the two sides prepare for their 24th encounter, fans can expect an intense, emotionally charged contest — and potentially, one of the classic matches in WAFCON history.
