Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the iconic American sitcom The Cosby Show, has died after drowning at a beach in Costa Rica. He was 54.
According to a statement released Monday by Costa Rican authorities, Warner died of drowning asphyxiation on Sunday at Coles Beach in Cahuita, located on the country’s Caribbean coast.
Police investigators said Warner had entered the sea when he was pulled out by a strong current. Although beachgoers and Red Cross lifeguards attempted to resuscitate him, he was declared dead at the scene. His body has been transferred to a local morgue for further examination.
Warner rose to fame as the charming and witty Theo, the only son of Cliff and Clair Huxtable, on The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992. The series, created by comedian Bill Cosby, broke new ground in American television for its portrayal of an upper-middle-class Black family living in Brooklyn.
In addition to his Emmy-nominated performance on The Cosby Show, Warner appeared in popular sitcoms such as Malcolm & Eddie and Reed Between the Lines. He was also known for his work as a director, musician, and spoken word artist.
Despite the enduring popularity of The Cosby Show, its legacy has been clouded by numerous sexual assault allegations against Cosby, who was once one of America’s most beloved entertainers.
Warner, who kept a relatively low profile in recent years, remained widely respected in the entertainment industry for his versatility and commitment to socially conscious projects.
Tributes from fans and colleagues have begun pouring in on social media, remembering him as a gifted performer and a voice of integrity in Hollywood.
