VALUING TEACHERS: A CALL FOR A NEW SOCIAL CONTRACT IN EDUCATION

Date:

There has been an urgent call for the need to reimagine societal views and values for teachers.

Principal, Government Secondary School Pyaska, Comrade Muhammad Ahmad Muhammed, in an exclusive discussion on ADBN’s flagship program, Morning Express, laid a blueprint for reshaping the role of educators within educational system while discussing the theme “Valuing Teachers’ Voices: A New Social Contract for Education”.

Comrade Muhammed argued for a transformative shift that recognizes teachers as trusted professionals and experts in their field.

“Teachers must be seen as partners in education policy-making,” he said, advocating for educators to have a more prominent voice in decisions that impact curriculum development and resource allocation.

According to him, this new social contract would elevate the role of teachers, ensuring they are active participants in shaping the future of education.

A key component of this vision includes greater societal acknowledgment of the complexities and emotional labor associated with teaching.

The educator highlighted importance of comprehensive support systems that prioritize teacher well-being and mental health.

“It’s not just about instructing; the emotional toll of teaching requires mental health support,” he added.

Comrade Mohammed further proposed that teachers should have more control over their professional development.

He called for enhanced access to ongoing training, resources, and collaborative networks to help educators stay ahead in their profession.

“Teachers must be empowered to take ownership of their growth,” he stressed, emphasizing that empowering educators will directly benefit students.

The teacher also touched on educational policies, urging policymakers to focus on equity, justice, and inclusivity.

“We need to address systemic barriers and biases that hinder students’ learning experiences,” he stated, calling for policy changes that create a level playing field for all students.

In conclusion, Comrade Muhammed underscored the importance of reframing education as a public good rather than a commodity.

He called for fair compensation and improved working conditions for teachers, reflecting the critical role they play in shaping future generations.

“By valuing teachers’ voices and reimagining the social contract, we can build a more just, equitable, and effective educational system,” Muhammed concluded, offering a hopeful vision for the future of education.
