US Issues Strict Warning: Nigerian Visa Overstayers Face Permanent Ban

Date:

Abuja, Nigeria – The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to travelers, stating that overstaying visas will result in severe consequences, including permanent bans and potential criminal prosecution.

In a statement released Monday, the mission emphasized that excuses like “honest mistakes” will not be accepted.

“If you overstay your U.S. visa, you could face a permanent ban on travel to the United States as well as criminal prosecution,” the warning read. “Consular officers have full access to your immigration history and will know about past violations. There is no such thing as an ‘honest mistake.'”

The warning comes amid stricter enforcement under President Donald Trump, who began his second term on January 20, 2025, with a pledge to deport “criminal aliens” who entered the U.S. illegally.

Mass raids have already been conducted across homes, workplaces, and public spaces, leading to the deportation of undocumented immigrants from countries including Nigeria, India, and Guatemala.

Last Friday, the U.S. government announced the termination of legal protections for approximately 532,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. These individuals, who entered under a program initiated by former President Joe Biden, now have weeks to leave the country.

Nigeria remains one of the largest sources of African immigration to the U.S., with about 376,000 Nigerian immigrants residing there as of 2015. The Nigerian diaspora, particularly in America, contributes over $20 billion annually to Nigeria’s economy, according to World Bank data.

With the U.S. being a top destination for Nigerian migrants, the new enforcement measures could significantly affect travel and remittance flows.
