The University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) has called for a full investigation into the death of Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student, who was allegedly shot by a security operative in an off-campus incident.
In a statement released on Sunday by Dr. Sam Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications and Public Relations, the university expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and urged security agencies to carry out a thorough and transparent probe into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Though the incident occurred outside the university’s premises, Uniport reaffirmed its concern, noting that Akpakpan was a bonafide member of the university community.
“The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event,” the statement read. “We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law.”
The university appealed for calm among students and staff and urged all parties to allow the authorities conduct their investigation without interference.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this very difficult time,” the statement added.
The Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue a formal response regarding the alleged shooting.
Uniport reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of its students and staff, pledging to take all necessary steps to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
