Tinubu Orders EFCC To Vacate Freeze On Osun Government Accounts

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately return to court to vacate the order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

In a personally signed statement, the President said he was deeply embarrassed by the timing of the EFCC’s action, stressing that although the agency acted on a valid court order obtained on August 5, he had no prior knowledge of the move.

Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to the independence of anti-corruption agencies, noting that he has consistently allowed institutions such as the EFCC to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without political interference.

However, he said the timing of the action, just days before the Osun governorship election, could undermine public confidence in the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.

The President stated that no action by any federal institution should create the impression that government agencies are being used to influence elections.

He therefore directed the EFCC to immediately return to court to vacate the freezing order and discontinue the action against the Osun State Government in the interest of preserving the fairness and credibility of Nigeria’s democracy.

The directive comes a day after the EFCC defended the account freeze, insisting it was part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct and was not intended to influence the forthcoming governorship election.
