AWKA — The Anambra State Police Command has ordered the detention and disciplinary trial of three police inspectors accused of extorting money from a civilian during a patrol in Awka.
According to a statement on Thursday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the officers unlawfully stopped an unsuspecting member of the public, searched his phone without cause, and extorted money from him.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the officers’ actions and ordered their immediate detention on June 11. He also directed that internal disciplinary proceedings be launched against them.
“The CP during interrogation of the officers frowned at the poor character exhibited when they accosted an unsuspecting member of the public during a security patrol, forcibly searched his phone and extorted money from the victim,” the statement read.
CP Orutugu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, warning that misconduct will not be tolerated.
“Such anomalies, aside from negating the professional calling of the police, are unacceptable as they affect the entire execution of policies and directives,” he said. “Your character will widen the trust gap between the citizens and the force.”
The command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and abuse of office, pledging to restore public confidence through disciplinary enforcement and institutional integrity.
