ABUJA — As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has appealed to Nigerians to prioritise road safety and exercise caution during the holiday.
In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal noted that national holidays often come with increased travel activities, which heighten the risk of road accidents.
“Records from past years show that public holidays usually see a heightened use of roads by motorists traveling to visit friends, families, and loved ones,” Mohammed said. “Unfortunately, such movements often come with tendencies to flout traffic regulations, leading to road accidents.”
He called on all road users to show moderation and respect for others, stressing that the roads are shared spaces requiring discipline, orderliness, and mutual consideration.
Mohammed urged motorists to avoid reckless behavior such as driving under the influence, disobeying traffic signals, and driving against traffic flow, which pose serious threats to public safety.
He also congratulated Nigerians on the milestone of 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance and reaffirmed the FRSC’s readiness to ensure safer roads during and beyond the Democracy Day celebrations.
“Let us remember: only the living can celebrate. Drive safely. Stay alive,” he advised.
