Two soldiers and a vigilante have been killed following an attack by suspected terrorists on a Joint Task Force (JTF) base in Gwana District, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The assault occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at about 4:32 p.m., and also resulted in the abduction of three community members.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command, Superintendent of Police Nafiu Habib, confirmed the development in a statement titled: “Security Breach: Seven Bandits Neutralized During Attack in Gwana District, As CP Sani-Omolori Orders Additional Deployment.”
According to the statement, the slain soldiers were attached to the 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi.
“Unfortunately, as a result of the attack, two soldiers attached to 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi and a vigilante paid the supreme price during the encounter. Three members of the affected community were also abducted, and about seven bandits were neutralised by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Police (AKU) during the gun duel,” Habib stated.
The command said seven of the attackers were killed during a fierce exchange of gunfire with the Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered additional deployment of personnel to the area to restore calm, protect residents and prevent further attacks.
He assured the public that intelligence gathering and monitoring operations are ongoing to track down fleeing suspects and secure the release of the abducted victims.
“Further updates will be provided as the situation unfolds,” the statement added.
The latest attack underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of Bauchi State and the wider North-East region, where security agencies continue to battle armed groups and criminal elements targeting rural communities and security formations.
