Super Falcons Edge South Africa, Advance to WAFCON Final

Date:

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked their place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa in Casablanca.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade put Nigeria ahead just before half-time, calmly converting a penalty to give the nine-time champions the lead. South Africa responded in the 59th minute through Linda Mothlalo, who also scored from the spot to draw Banyana Banyana level.

But in the dying moments of stoppage time, Michelle Alozie struck a sensational winner in the 94th minute, sending Nigeria into their 14th WAFCON final and keeping their bid alive for a record-extending 10th continental title.

The Super Falcons will face the winner of the second semi-final between hosts Morocco and Ghana in Saturday’s final.
