The Nigerian Senate will hold a special session on Wednesday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13 in London after a prolonged illness.
The session, according to a statement from the Senate, will reflect on Buhari’s legacy and his contributions to Nigeria’s national development. The former leader, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 and earlier as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, was laid to rest last week in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier led a tribute at a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session, describing Buhari as a leader who “governed with restraint and dignity” and bore the burdens of office without complaint.
Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed social media reports suggesting that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review has recommended the creation of new states.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation,” Akpabio said during Tuesday’s plenary, adding that no new state has been created and any such decision would follow a rigorous constitutional process.
He urged the public to await official communication from the National Assembly on any constitutional developments.
