Super Eagles Drop to 39th in Latest FIFA Rankings; Maintain 5th in Africa

Date:

Nigeria’s National Football Team, the Super Eagles, have fallen one place in the FIFA World Rankings, moving from 38th to 39th globally, according to the latest rankings released by the world football governing body on Thursday.

Despite this slight decline, the three-time African champions have maintained their position as the fifth-best team on the continent.

The drop in rankings follows a disappointing performance in the recent round of games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Super Eagles drew one-one against South Africa and suffered a one-two defeat to Benin Republic.

Earlier in June, Nigeria experienced a significant drop of eight places in the global rankings, erasing gains made from their performance at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Morocco continues to lead the African rankings, followed by Senegal and Egypt in second and third place respectively.

Globally, Argentina retains the top spot after successfully defending their Copa America title, with France trailing in second place.

Spain, winners of Euro 2024, have moved up five places to third, displacing England and Brazil to fourth and fifth positions respectively.

The next FIFA World Rankings update is scheduled for 19th September, 2024.
