Sporting Lisbon has parted ways with coach Joao Pereira just over a month after he took over from Ruben Amorim.
The club announced on Thursday that Rui Borges would take charge as the new head coach.
Pereira’s tenure at Sporting was short-lived, marked by a significant dip in form. He was appointed following Amorim’s departure to manage English Premier League side Manchester United. Under Pereira’s leadership, Sporting struggled, losing their first four matches across the Primeira Liga and Champions League.
Before Pereira’s arrival, Sporting enjoyed a 100% record in the league this season. However, the team’s performance deteriorated, culminating in a goalless draw against Gil Vicente last weekend, which saw them relinquish the top spot in the Primeira Liga to rivals Benfica.
Rui Borges, 43, comes in with an impressive track record. Previously at Vitoria Guimaraes, he guided the team to a second-place finish in the league phase of the UEFA Conference League and a respectable sixth-place position in the Primeira Liga.
Sporting fans will hope Borges can reignite the club’s title aspirations and restore their dominance in both domestic and European competitions.
