Several passengers were injured on Monday morning following a train incident on the Abuja–Kaduna rail line, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, said the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. near Asham Train Station.

According to Opeifa, the incident involved a rear locomotive making contact with the passenger coach immediately behind it due to a coupling issue.

He confirmed that several passengers sustained injuries but noted that no fatalities were recorded.

Emergency Response Activated

Opeifa said injured passengers were promptly attended to and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Emergency response protocols were immediately activated, with technical teams deployed to the site to assess the situation.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau is also on site to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident in line with established safety procedures.

The affected train eventually arrived at Idu Train Station at approximately 10:39 a.m., about 38 minutes behind schedule, after the damaged locomotive and coach were removed.

Rail Safety Concerns

The Nigerian Railway Corporation assured passengers that safety remains its top priority and that measures are being taken to ensure the continued safe operation of rail services.

Nigeria’s rail system has experienced several derailments in recent years, particularly along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

In 2025, the Nigerian Senate launched a nationwide investigation into persistent rail failures.

Lawmakers established an ad hoc committee chaired by Adams Oshiomhole to examine the causes of repeated derailments, assess the condition of rail infrastructure, and review loans obtained from China for rail development.

The committee was mandated to present its findings to the Senate after a six-week investigation that includes a public hearing.
