President of the Tenth Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, has once again assured Nigerians that the legislative arm of government is committed to amending the constitution to ensure the seamless implementation of local government autonomy across the country.
Senator Akpabio made this statement after casting his vote in his hometown, Essien Udim Local Government Area, during Saturday’s local government elections. Accompanied by his wife, Her Excellency Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, the Senate President joined other Akwa Ibom citizens in exercising their franchise.
According to Senator Akpabio, local government autonomy is crucial for accelerating development at the grassroots level. He emphasized that democracy is essential for fostering this growth, ensuring that governance benefits the common man.
The Senate President highlighted his participation in the election as both a personal duty and an encouragement to others to engage actively in the democratic process. He also acknowledged the challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy but reassured the public of President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing these issues.
Reflecting on his time as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio noted that his leadership was driven by the people’s will. He affirmed that his current relationship with the state government remains rooted in a shared dedication to the welfare of Akwa Ibom’s citizens.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mmenyene Afahaideh, Ward Chairman of Ukana West 2 in Essien Udim Local Government Area, voiced concerns about the election’s conduct but expressed hope for a favorable outcome.
