Senate Approves Death Penalty for Importation of Hard Drugs

Date:

Senate has approved the death penalty as punishment for the importation of hard drugs into the country. This also applies to the manufacturing, trafficking, dealing in, or delivery of drugs by any means.

Senate whip, Senator Ali Ndume, during the consideration of the report on the bill for passage today, recommended that the penalty be “toughened” to the death penalty.

Senator representing Edo North, Senator Adams Oshiomole, expressed his displeasure over what he considered a hasty consideration and passage of the amended clause.

However, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin rejected an objection by Senator Oshiomhole to reverse the ruling, insisting that it came late which is against the rules.

The penalty for drug importation or dealership is captured in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Section 11 of the existing law, which Senator Ndume sought to increase to a death sentence.
