Security Concerns Dominate National Assembly as Gwoza Bombings Stir Shock and Outrage

Date:

Pressing security situation across Nigeria was the main focus at the National Assembly on Wednesday, with Lawmakers expressing shock over the heinous suicide bombing attacks in Gwoza Town, Borno State, on June 29, 2024.

Debates extended for several hours as Lawmakers declared that the Country’s security system had collapsed as they attributed the recent suicide bombings in Gwoza to a failure of intelligence by the security forces.

The discussions followed a Motion moved by Senator Ali Ndume regarding the Boko Haram insurgents’ suicide attack in Gwoza, Borno State as Lawmakers voiced their concern over the alarming loss of lives in Borno, describing the situation as deeply troubling.

Lawmakers while criticising security chiefs over the deteriorating security situation, described the state of affairs as both dire and shameful.

They urged the federal government to have the military re-strategize its conventional methods of combating insurgency and other crimes by employing modern technology and scientific tactics.

Senator Akpabio after deliberations, expressed condolences to the victims, government, and people of Borno State over the tragic suicide attacks in Gwoza.

The Senate directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials and medical support to the victims as a matter of national emergency.
