The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has denied any involvement in the use of the Russian flag by some individuals during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
The embassy issued a statement on Monday addressing the concerns raised after protesters in some Northern States were seen waving the Russian flag.
In their statement, the Embassy clarified that neither the Russian Government nor its Officials are connected to the protesters’ activities.
The Embassy emphasized that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries, including Nigeria. The use of Russian symbols by the protesters was attributed to personal choices and does not reflect any official stance or policy of the Russian government.
The Embassy expressed respect for Nigeria’s democratic processes, recognizing peaceful demonstrations as a legitimate form of democratic expression. However, it also condemned any potential disruptions or acts of violence that might arise from these events.
The #EndBadGovernance protests began nationwide last Thursday in response to the country’s hardships. Videos later emerged showing demonstrators in some northern states displaying the Russian flag. This raised concerns among authorities, prompting a warning from the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who stated that such actions could be considered treasonous.
Additionally, the Department of State Services (DSS) announced the arrest of the tailor involved in the mass production of the flags and some sponsors of the protests.
