Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has directed Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to immediately take over the administration of the 23 Local Government Councils in the state. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s judgment outlawing caretaker arrangements in the local government system in Nigeria.
In a statewide broadcast from Government House, Port Harcourt, on Sunday, Governor Fubara also instructed outgoing Local Government Council Chairmen to formally hand over the reins of power to the administrators by Monday, March 3, 2025.
The Governor explained that the measure was necessary to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling and to maintain stability in the state. He expressed regret over the challenges posed by the court’s pronouncements but urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities peacefully.
“The government remains committed to advancing good governance and ensuring the well-being of all citizens,” Governor Fubara stated.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is expected to conduct fresh elections to fill the vacant positions in the local government councils.
