Sole Administrator Vows to Restore Legislative Activities
Port Harcourt, Rivers State – The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), has directed the contractor handling the reconstruction of the State Assembly Complex to expedite work and deliver the project within six months. The move is part of efforts to restore full legislative activities in the state, which have been disrupted due to the ongoing political crisis.
During an inspection visit to the construction site located along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Ibas emphasized the importance of completing the project on time. He stated that his mandate includes ensuring the restoration of effective governance structures, including a functional legislative arm.
Project Overview
The Rivers State Assembly Complex project, awarded to Monier Construction Company (MCC) Limited, features a two-storey building with 34 en-suite offices, a gallery, meeting rooms, a conference hall, and an elevator. The project has seen significant progress, and Ibas expressed satisfaction with the work done so far.
Ibas’s Commitment to Restoring Order
Accompanied by the Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, Ibas was conducted round the site by the General Manager of MCC, Engr. Omaka Oko. The Sole Administrator reiterated his commitment to maintaining law and order in the state, which he described as essential for restoring normalcy and effective governance.
“In the last two days of my assumption of duties, I have noticed a missing pillar in the State governance structure. I am determined to ensure that there is a place for effective legislative activities after six months,” Ibas said.
He further emphasized that his appointment was aimed at stabilizing the state and enabling it to return to its rightful status. “I was appointed to maintain law and order, which will enable the State to go back to what it is supposed to be,” he added.
Background
The Rivers State Assembly Complex was damaged during the political crisis that rocked the state, leading to the suspension of legislative activities. President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the appointment of Ibas as Sole Administrator were part of measures to address the crisis and restore stability.
The completion of the Assembly Complex is expected to facilitate the resumption of legislative duties, which is crucial for the effective functioning of the state’s governance structure.
