The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old suspected kidnap kingpin, Nwile Bete, during a sting operation in Port Harcourt.
The operation also resulted in the rescue of a 10-year-old boy allegedly abducted by the suspect.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, noting that Bete was linked to the abduction of the minor on November 25 and had demanded a ransom of N5 million for the child’s release.
“After the minor was abducted, his mother reported the incident to the police, prompting the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take swift action,” Iringe-Koko stated.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers tracked the suspect to Rumuekeni School Road in Rumuekeni Town, Port Harcourt, where he was apprehended. Following his arrest, Bete reportedly confessed to the crime and led the operatives to Sogho Village in Khana, where the victim was found unharmed.
“The victim has since been debriefed and reunited with his family, while the suspect remains in custody,” she added.
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of Bete’s gang who remain at large. SP Iringe-Koko assured the public that the suspect would face appropriate charges in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
“This arrest is a significant breakthrough and part of the police command’s broader strategy to tackle crime and criminal activities in Rivers State,” she said.
The Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in the state.
