A retired Controller of Works with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, AbdulRazaq Ajani, was brutally murdered at his residence in the Tanke area of Ilorin, Kwara State, on January 1, 2025.
Sources revealed that the assailants, four young men aged between 18 and 22, trailed Ajani to his home shortly after he returned from Offa, where he and his family had celebrated the New Year. The incident occurred around 3 p.m., mere moments after the family arrived.
The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident, stating, “Yes, the incident happened. I can confirm to you that a retired Controller of Works was killed in the Tanke area on Wednesday. Police have waded into the incident and commenced investigations.”
Although no arrests have been made, police investigations are ongoing.
A family member, speaking on condition of anonymity, detailed the chilling sequence of events. CCTV footage reportedly captured two of the young men loitering near the compound gate, while the other two casually entered the premises. Upon noticing the intruders from one of the sitting rooms, Ajani approached the door to engage them in conversation. Moments later, he was attacked, leaving him lying face down.
An eyewitness recounted the horrifying scene: “He was attacked and hacked to death in the presence of his wife and children. Blood stains cover the walls, and his brain was scattered on the floor. It was gruesome.”
Ajani retired from the Federal Ministry of Works four years ago but had recently returned to work on a contract basis in 2024. The tragic incident has left his family and the community in deep mourning, with neighbors and sympathizers thronging his residence to offer condolences.
Police are urging the public to provide any information that could help identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
