President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to the government and people of the United States over the death of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late Carter as a global statesman whose dedication to humanity and leadership left an indelible mark on the world.
The Nigerian leader lauded Carter’s lifelong commitment to peace, democracy, and eradicating tropical diseases, particularly his contributions to Nigeria through The Carter Center, which played a significant role in combating Guinea worm disease and river blindness.
“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” President Tinubu stated.
“He tackled challenges in the developing world, mediating conflicts, promoting democratic values, and fighting diseases, all while exemplifying grace, dignity, and profound respect for humanity.”
Reflecting on Carter’s visit to Nigeria in 1978 during his presidency, Tinubu noted that the trip marked a pivotal moment in U.S.-Africa relations and laid the foundation for a pragmatic partnership between Nigeria and the United States.
The Nigerian President expressed hope that the late American leader’s legacy of character and service would continue to inspire leaders around the world.
Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, served from 1977 to 1981. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian work, which continued long after his presidency.
The passing of President Carter has drawn tributes globally, with many celebrating his lifelong commitment to justice and human dignity.
