U.S. President Joe Biden has declared January 9, 2025, a National Day of Mourning in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away recently at the age of 100.
In a proclamation issued by the White House on Sunday, President Biden called on Americans to gather in their places of worship on the designated day to honor the memory of the 39th U.S. President, widely revered for his humanitarian contributions and global peace efforts.
“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance,” Biden stated.
Jimmy Carter, who served as President from 1977 to 1981, was celebrated for his commitment to peace, democracy, and humanitarian causes. His post-presidential work through The Carter Center earned him global recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
The National Day of Mourning will be marked by solemn ceremonies and remembrance activities across the United States, allowing Americans and people worldwide to reflect on Carter’s enduring legacy of compassion and service to humanity.
