REPS URGE AGF TO EXPEDITE TRIALS OF INDIVIDUALS IN PROLONGED DETENTION

Date:

The House of Representatives on Thursday called on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to review cases involving individuals held in extended pre-trial detention and take swift action to expedite their trials.

Additionally, the House urged the judiciary to adopt innovative case management strategies to ensure timely hearings, particularly for those who have been subjected to prolonged detention without trial.

This resolution followed a motion moved by Rep. Ahmed Sani Muhammad during the plenary session in Abuja. In his motion, Muhammad emphasized that both the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and international human rights standards guarantee the fundamental right to a fair and speedy trial.

He further highlighted the concerning number of individuals languishing in pre-trial detention for extended periods without due process.
