Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has charged the Super Falcons to set their sights on winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup, following their recent triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Speaking during a reception hosted by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Mrs Tinubu lauded the team’s resilience and unity, describing their WAFCON performance as inspirational.
“I told Mr. President this morning that you need to win the World Cup, and he thought I was too ambitious—and [Rasheedat] Ajibade just seconded that, and that is really possible,” she said, drawing laughter from the team.
Congratulating the players on their 10th continental title, the First Lady hailed them as role models and praised their relentless spirit. “Your triumph in Morocco was a restatement of resilience, teamwork, and determination. You reminded the world why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football,” she said.
She also extended appreciation to the coaches, technical staff, Nigerian Football Federation, and the fans who supported the Falcons’ victorious campaign.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and the 11-man technical team. He also announced:
- A three-bedroom apartment for each team member
- A cash reward equivalent to $100,000 for each player
- $50,000 equivalent for each member of the technical team
“With this, Nigeria’s spirit is unyielding and will never die,” the President declared.
The Super Falcons secured the 2024 WAFCON title with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over hosts Morocco in the final played on July 26 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
