A Qantas passenger plane departing from Sydney, Australia, encountered engine failure on Friday, forcing it to circle before safely making an emergency landing.
The airline confirmed the incident in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
In a related update, Sydney Airport reported a grass fire that ignited along one side of the runway shortly after the plane made an emergency landing.
While it remains unclear if the fire was linked to the engine failure, authorities have since contained the blaze, although some flight delays are expected.
The aircraft, a twin-engine Boeing 737-800 en route to Brisbane, reportedly experienced a loud engine malfunction. Qantas has not disclosed the number of passengers onboard but confirmed that no injuries were recorded.
“We understand this would have been a distressing experience for our customers, and we will be reaching out to them for support,” said Qantas Chief Pilot, Captain Richard Tobiano.
He also announced that the airline will be conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the engine failure.
