A Trigana Air flight carrying 48 people skidded off the runway in Indonesia’s remote Papua region on Monday, injuring several passengers.
The ATR-42 aircraft was departing from the Yapen Islands regency en route to Jayapura, Papua’s capital when the incident occurred.
The plane had 42 passengers, including a baby, and six crew members aboard. According to local police chief Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo, all passengers survived and were taken to a hospital for medical checkups.
“Praise God everybody survived,” Hercahyo said in a statement, adding that authorities are investigating the cause of the incident and working to prevent future occurrences.
Indonesia relies heavily on air transport to connect its many islands and has a challenging aviation safety record. Papua, with its mountainous terrain and frequent bad weather, is one of the most difficult regions to access by air.
This latest incident comes years after a 2015 Trigana Air crash in Papua, which tragically claimed the lives of all 54 passengers on board.
