President Tinubu Swears in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as CJN

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), following her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja on Monday.

Justice Kekere-Ekun succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who served from June 27, 2022, until his retirement on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the age of 70.

The ceremony was attended by three of her predecessors: the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, along with Justices Mahmud Mohammed and Walter Onnoghen, as well as her predecessor, Justice Ariwoola.

Also present were members of her family and other Justices of the Supreme Court. Notably, Kekere-Ekun is taking the oath of office for the second time in just five weeks; she was previously sworn in by President Tinubu in an acting capacity on August 23, before her Senate confirmation.
