President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking his continued leadership of the regional bloc approximately one year after assuming office.
The Nigerian leader who rose to power in May 2023 was re-elected as the ECOWAS Chairman during the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The event took place at the Presidential Villa in Nigeria’s Abuja Capital yesterday.
President Tinubu in his opening remark at the summit, urged ECOWAS Member States to make financial commitments to help in the battle against terrorism in the region.
President Tinubu also called on Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS to work towards establishing and sustaining a regional standby force for the security and economic advancement of the community.
He emphasized the expediency of a standby force in the face of growing regional security threats.
The Chairman of ECOWAS appointed the President of Senegal, His Excellency, Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and the President of Togo, His Excellency, Mr. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, as Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.
