President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially handed over the chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone at the close of the 67th Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held in Abuja.
The symbolic presentation of the ECOWAS emblem marked the end of Tinubu’s tenure, during which he led the region through significant political, economic, and security challenges.
In his remarks, President Tinubu urged West African leaders to remain united in defending democracy, promoting stability, and fostering inclusive growth. He emphasized that sustainable economic development is impossible without political stability.
In his acceptance speech, President Bio identified four key priorities for his leadership: restoring constitutional order, revitalising regional security, unlocking deeper economic integration, and rebuilding the institutional credibility of ECOWAS.
President Bio becomes the first Sierra Leonean head of state to assume the chairmanship of the regional body.
