President Bola Tinubu has approved the release of N108 billion to address flooding and other natural disasters across the 36 states of Nigeria.
This announcement was made on Wednesday by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a meeting at the State House in Abuja.
While addressing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, Vice President Shettima emphasized the President’s commitment to supporting states in managing the effects of natural disasters, describing the situation in Maiduguri as a “national calamity.”
“The President has demonstrated his willingness and commitment to collaborate with the states in addressing these challenges,” Shettima remarked. “Recently, he approved the release of N3 billion to each state to ensure that all regions of the country are engaged and feel supported.”
Vice President Shettima also praised Speaker Tajudeen for his “stellar leadership” in the National Assembly, noting the stability within the House despite nearly 70% of its members being newly elected.
“Your leadership has provided stability in the House of Representatives. We commend you and wish you well. You are an important part of our democratic journey,” Shettima added.
He further highlighted the importance of harmonious relationships between the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government, stating that such collaboration is vital to sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
In response, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen expressed his condolences to Vice President Shettima, President Tinubu, and the people of Borno State, which has been significantly affected by flooding. He assured that the National Assembly would support affected communities, pledging to provide the necessary assistance to help them recover.
This significant financial commitment from the federal government underscores the administration’s proactive approach to mitigating the impact of natural disasters across the nation.
