Christian leaders in Plateau State staged a peaceful protest on Monday, calling for urgent government intervention to stop the persistent killings and attacks plaguing the state. The demonstration, organized by the Church Leaders Denominational Forum, saw clergy and worshippers demanding justice for victims and improved security measures.
Rev. Amos Mohzo, President of the Church of Christ in Nations and leader of the protest, outlined key demands:
- Enhanced Security: Establishment of well-trained, equipped community policing with rapid response capabilities
- Thorough Investigations: Prosecution of perpetrators, sponsors, and collaborators behind the violence
- Humanitarian Support: Immediate aid for displaced persons in need of shelter and livelihood assistance
- Root Cause Analysis: Addressing historical grievances, poverty, and illegal arms proliferation fueling conflicts
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang received the protesters at the Government House, acknowledging the devastating impact of decades-long insecurity on farming and economic activities. “I didn’t become governor to preside over burials,” Mutfwang stated, vowing to ensure justice for victims. He revealed ongoing security strategizing with President Bola Tinubu while cautioning against vigilante justice.
The protest follows recent deadly attacks that have displaced hundreds across Plateau communities, with Christians particularly targeted in several incidents. Authorities face mounting pressure to implement sustainable solutions beyond temporary military deployments.
