Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has condemned the poor treatment of Nigeria’s national football team by Libyan authorities after the squad was stranded for over 12 hours at Al Abraq Airport on Sunday.
The team was en route to Benghazi for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier but was unexpectedly redirected to Al Abraq Airport. Upon arrival, they were left without food, water, or access to communication, which Troost-Ekong described as a “disgrace” in a series of tweets on Monday.
He accused Libyan authorities of playing “mind games” by locking airport gates and keeping the team isolated.
Troost-Ekong also highlighted the challenges faced by their Tunisian pilot, who was denied hotel accommodation by the government and had to sleep in the parked plane with his crew.
The Super Eagles captain called for the Nigerian government to intervene, declaring that the team would not play the match under such circumstances.
The Super Eagles had travelled for the second leg of their AFCON qualifier against Libya, after securing a 1-0 win in the first leg in Uyo on Friday.
