Ogun Pupil Loses Eye in Classroom Accident, Teacher Arrested

Date:

The Ogun State police command has arrested a student-teacher for allegedly causing an 11-year-old pupil to lose her right eye.

The victim, Alao Idera, is a primary six student at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko, located in the state. The teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, a 400-level student at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, was reportedly conducting her teaching practice at the school.

According to the Police Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the incident occurred when Adeyemo, holding a cane, was in the classroom preparing for an end-of-year party. As the primary six pupils rushed towards her, the cane inadvertently pierced Idera’s right eye, leading to severe injury.

The injured pupil was promptly taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where doctors performed surgery, but the right eye had to be removed.

“Following the incident, Adeyemo was arrested and is currently under interrogation. It was clarified that the teacher did not flog the student, nor was there any wrongdoing on the pupil’s part,” Odutola said.

Odutola also revealed that after learning of the extent of the injury, Adeyemo attempted suicide but was quickly rescued and is now in stable condition at the hospital.
