The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withdrawn all the corps members serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The decision, implemented by the Kwara State NYSC Directorate, followed an alleged assault on a female corps member by some teachers at the school.
The teachers reportedly accused the corps member of failing to greet them properly.
According to reports, the female corps member, whose identity remains undisclosed, visited the school last Thursday to collect her clearance letter.
She was allegedly scolded by a teacher for not greeting them appropriately, leading to a physical altercation during which her NYSC uniform was reportedly torn.
Eyewitnesses claimed that another teacher joined in the assault by slapping her.
In response to the incident, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, visited the school on Monday before inspecting Batch C, Stream 2 corps members at the ongoing orientation course in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area.
The withdrawal of corps members from both the junior and senior arms of the school was ordered as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety.
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of NYSC Kwara State, Oladipo Morakinyo, stated:
“Yes, it is true that all NYSC members serving in the school have been withdrawn temporarily, pending the outcome of investigations by the panel set up by the government on the alleged assault. Though the affected corps member serves in the junior school, all corps members in the senior school were also withdrawn to protect them from potential harm.”
The Kwara State Government condemned the incident and launched an investigation.
The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, described the act as unacceptable and emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and harmony in the state’s educational institutions.
“The Kwara State Government condemns the alleged assault against the corps member. The state is known for peace and harmony, and we will not tolerate actions that jeopardize the safety of our academic institutions,” the commissioner said.
She further assured that the implicated teacher, identified as Mrs. Amuzat Fatima Nike, has been summoned, and appropriate disciplinary measures will follow.
The commissioner appealed to the NYSC management and the public to remain patient and law-abiding while the investigation continues.
Calm has since been restored at the school following an unscheduled visit by the Anti-Loitering Team of the Ministry and the Management Team of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission.
