The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly criticised the Niger State Government over alleged plans to shut down Badeggi FM 90.1 and demolish its premises, describing the move as a blatant assault on press freedom.
In a statement issued by NUJ National President, Alhassan Abdullahi, the union condemned the reported threats against the private radio station based in Minna, calling the action “a dangerous overreach of executive power” and a direct attack on independent journalism.
“The threats issued against Badeggi FM 90.1 by the Niger State Government are deeply troubling and represent a dangerous overreach of executive power,” Abdullahi stated. “Such actions undermine democracy and send a chilling message to independent media organisations.”
He reiterated that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is legally empowered to regulate and sanction broadcast stations in Nigeria, not state governments.
“No state government has the constitutional right to interfere with the operations or facilities of any media house,” Abdullahi stressed. “Independent journalism must never be stifled through threats, intimidation, or politically motivated directives.”
The union urged Governor Umaru Bago to immediately withdraw the threat and allow due process to address any concerns. It also called on civil society organisations and the public to oppose executive actions that endanger press freedom.
“We will not stand by and watch as journalists and media institutions are harassed for doing their job,” Abdullahi added.
